USDOT pre-trip and post-trip lighting inspections
-
- Clean & Undamaged: Lenses must be free of cracks, dirt, and tape. Reflectors and conspicuity (reflective) tape must not be torn or missing. [1, 2]
- Color Requirements:
- Visibility: Headlights must be visible from at least 500 feet. [1]
- Specific Checks:
-
- Activate high and low beams, 4-way flashers, and left/right turn signals.
- Have someone press the brake pedal (or use a brake pedal depressor) to verify brake light and ABS light activation.
- Ensure three identification (ID) lamps are present at the top front (amber) and top rear (red) if the vehicle is over 80 inches wide. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
-
-
- Damage Check: Look for fresh cracks in lenses, broken housings, or wiring that may have been pulled loose by road debris.
- DVIR Logging: FMCSA regulations (49 CFR 396.11) require a written Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) at the end of each day’s work. Note any defective, dim, or missing lights so the motor carrier can schedule maintenance. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
-
- Midpoint Marker Lamps: Trailers 30 feet or longer require intermediate (midpoint) amber side marker lamps and reflectors.
- Secure Mounting: All lamps must be mounted securely on a permanent part of the vehicle. Dangling or zip-tied lights are automatic failures.
- Corroded Wiring: Wires must not be frayed, and connections must be tight and corrosion-free. [1, 2, 3, 4]
