Does My Truck or Trailer Need a USDOT Annual Inspection?
The 10,001 lb GVWR Rule
For federal purposes, a vehicle used in interstate commerce to transport property is considered a commercial motor vehicle when its GVWR, GCWR, actual gross vehicle weight, or actual gross combination weight is 10,001 lbs. or more, whichever is greater.
The Part Many People Miss
When a truck and trailer are operated as a combination, you must look at the combination, not just each unit separately.
If the applicable combined rating or actual combined weight reaches 10,001 lbs. or more, the combination meets the federal commercial motor vehicle weight threshold.
And this is important:
If the combination qualifies as a commercial motor vehicle, each vehicle in that combination must be inspected.
That means the power unit and the trailer each require their own USDOT Annual Inspection.
Simple Example
- Pickup: 7,000-lb. GVWR
- Trailer: 5,000-lb. GVWR
- Combined: 12,000 lbs.
Neither unit by itself reaches 10,001 lbs. However, when operated together, the combination exceeds the 10,001-lb. threshold.
Result: Both the pickup AND the trailer require their own annual inspection, assuming the operation is subject to the applicable federal motor carrier safety regulations.
An Easy Way to Remember It
10,001 lbs. or more? Think COMBINATION.
- Don’t just look at the truck.
- Don’t just look at the trailer.
- Look at the combination.
If the truck-and-trailer combination meets the federal definition of a commercial motor vehicle, each vehicle in the combination must have its own qualifying periodic inspection.
How Often Is the Inspection Required?
A commercial motor vehicle subject to the federal periodic inspection requirements must have passed the required inspection at least once during the preceding 12 months.
