DOT Inspection or DOT Annual Inspection?
Let’s break it down for you
A DOT inspection is a comprehensive examination of a commercial motor vehicle and its driver, performed by a state or federal DOT inspector. The goal is to ensure compliance with all federal regulations established by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Inspections can take place at any time, either at roadside checkpoints or at designated inspection facilities.
The details of the inspection are recorded in the FMCSA database under your USDOT Number. Potential employers or contracting parties may access this information through FMCSA SAFER Web – Company Snapshot. They often require that your DOT inspection records and DOT authority are up-to-date in the FMCSA system before engaging in business with you or your company.
FMCSA Compliance Reminder
FMCSA requires you to ensure your company information is current and accurate in their system. Visit FMCSA SAFER to verify your details, such as your address and operational status. If you haven’t had an inspection at a roadside checkpoint or designated facility in the past two years, your information may not be fully up to date in the system.
How to Check and Update Your Information:
- Search by your USDOT number or company name.
- Review all details for accuracy.
- Update any outdated or missing information as needed.
What is a DOT Annual Inspection?
- A detailed inspection is performed annually by a qualified third-party provider, such as DOT Mobile Express®.
- Covers components and systems beyond a standard DOT inspection, ensuring vehicle safety.
- The driver information is not part of this Annual Inspection.
- The USDOT Annual Inspection is not uploaded into the FMCSA database, howevery it must be carried in the vehicle at all times.
