DOT Reflective Tape Requirements
Stay in compliance and avoid any issues
As of January 2026, the FMCSA requires certain commercial trailers to have reflective tape for improved visibility. This includes using DOT-C2 compliant tape in alternating red and white stripes, each stripe six inches long and two inches wide, covering at least half of each side. On the rear, the tape is placed in specific patterns, including horizontal stripes and an inverted L-shape at the corners. Trailers built after December 1, 1993, must comply, and non-compliance can lead to fines and safety risks. For the most up-to-date details, it’s best to check the FMCSA’s official guidelines.
