USDOT Pre/Post Inspection Tires Requirements
-
During a DOT pre-trip inspection, thoroughly check every tire for Inflation, Condition, and Depth (the ICD method). Inspect the tread face, as well as the inner and outer sidewalls, looking for punctures, bulges, cuts, and exposed cords. [1, 2, 3]
Critical Thresholds & Requirements
-
- Steer Tires: Minimum tread depth is \(\frac{4}{32}\) of an inch. Recapped or regrooved tires are strictly prohibited on steer axles. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Drive & Trailer Tires: Minimum tread depth is \(\frac{2}{32}\) of an inch. [1, 2]
- Pressure: Check with a manual air gauge to verify proper inflation. Never drive on a flat or visibly underinflated tire, as it risks a severe blowout and could put the vehicle out of service. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Damage Limits: Any cut that exposes cord fabric, or any sidewall bulge/bump greater than \(\frac{3}{8}\) of an inch is an immediate Out-of-Service violation. [1, 2, 3]
Wheel & Rim ComponentsAlongside the rubber itself, inspect the hardware: [1]-
- Rims & Wheels: Look for cracks, dents, or illegal welds.
- Lug Nuts: Ensure all are present. Signs of a loose nut include shiny threads, elongated bolt holes, or rust streaks trailing from the lug nut.
- Hub Oil Seal: Check the sight glass for proper fluid levels and ensure there are no leaks or loose/missing bolts.
- Dual Tires: Make sure there is adequate spacing between the tires and that they are not rubbing against each other. [1, 2, 3, 4]
