You must update your USDOT ID number

You must update your USDOT ID number registration

We frequently receive inquiries regarding our ability to conduct a USDOT Annual Inspection and subsequently upload the report into the FMCSA database. The definitive response is no, as only the USDOT/FMCSA can perform this action when your unit undergoes inspection at an authorized inspection station. Regrettably, if any issues arise, they will be documented in the FMCSA database, which is likely not a record you wish to have.

IF YOU HAVE NOT UPDATED YOUR INFORMATION OR IF YOUR UNIT HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED AT AN INSPECTION STATION IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, YOU ARE BEING CLASSIFIED AS INACTIVE IN THE FMCSA DATABASE.

WHAT TO DO

Routine USDOT Number Updates

To view a company’s current information, go to the ER System’s Company Snapshot.e SAF Updates can be done by filing an MCS-150 series form. See below for more information on updating your US DOT number information.

Biennial Updates

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires all entities under its jurisdiction to update their information every two years. You are required to provide this update every two years, even if your company has not changed its information, has ceased interstate operations since the last update, or is no longer in business, and you did not notify FMCSA.

Failure to complete a Biennial Update will result in the deactivation of your USDOT number and may result in civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000.

Updating your information is free. We have included instructions below to help you complete your biennial update.

What is the Deadline to Update?

Filing schedule: Each motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider must file the appropriate form at the following times:

  • Before it begins operations, and

If the next-to-last digit of the USDOT Number is even, the motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider shall file its update in every even-numbered calendar year.

How to Submit

There are three options available to submit your completed application forms.

Please note: Mailing application forms to FMCSA may delay the process. Instead, we recommend submitting via the Ask FMCSA Website:

Option 1: Submit via the Ask FMCSA Website

Upload forms through our Ask FMCSA website at: ask.fmcsa.dot.gov. You will receive a confirmation number by email.

Option 2: By US Mail

Important note for hard copy registrations: Forms must be received by FMCSA on or before the date your Biennial Update is due to avoid deactivation of your USDOT number and the assessment of civil penalties. Please allow ample time for mailing if choosing this option.
