What is a USDOT Number?
It is a unique identifier used by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to monitor safety practices and controls of companies or independent owner-operators.
Who needs a USDOT Number?
Companies that operate (CMVs) that transport cargo or passengers across state lines (interstate commerce) must have a unique number issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This DOT registration number and the carrier’s legal company name must be displayed on both sides of the vehicle.
Apart from the federal regulations, most states require their intrastate commercial motor vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT Number.

It’s always safest to use official government websites ending in .gov when looking up DOT numbers, MC numbers, or any other official transportation information. This helps ensure the information is accurate and trustworthy, and it also protects against scams or fraudulent sites that may try to charge unnecessary fees. I’ll keep this tip in mind for future reference.
