Stay Awake Behind the Wheel

Stay Awake Behind the Wheel

Each year, drowsy driving accounts for about 100,000 crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 fatalities, according to the National Safety Council (NSC).Sep 13, 2022

Some Helpful Tips

1. Get plenty of sleep before driving: Make sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep the night before a long trip.

2. Take regular breaks: Plan your trip in advance and schedule in regular breaks every two hours or so.

3. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages: Caffeine can help keep you alert, but be mindful of the amount you consume and don’t rely solely on it to stay awake.

4. Open a window or turn up the air conditioning: Cold air can help you stay alert and refreshed.

5. Listen to music or talk radio: Engage your mind and keep yourself alert by listening to music or talk radio.

6. Avoid heavy meals: Eating heavy meals before driving can make you feel sluggish and sleepy.

7. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic beverages to avoid dehydration.

8. Avoid medications that cause drowsiness: Certain medications can make you feel drowsy, so be aware of any potential side effects before taking them.

9. Avoid driving during late hours: If possible, avoid driving during the late night and early morning hours when your body is naturally inclined to sleep.

10. If you feel sleepy, pull over: If you start to feel drowsy or tired, pull over and take a nap or rest until you are feeling alert again. Remember, it is better to arrive late than not at all.

I personally avoid driving during the peak sleepiness periods (midnight – 6 a.m. and late afternoon).
