Semi Truck Emergency Highway Safety Tips

If you find yourself or someone else dealing with a broken-down semi-truck and trailer on the side of the highway, it is vital to prioritize safety. Here are some safety tips:

For the Driver of the Broken-Down Vehicle:

  1. Stay Calm: Assess the situation without panicking. Ensure that everyone in the vehicle remains calm.
  2. Move to a Safe Location: If possible, pull the truck and trailer onto the shoulder or a safe area off the road to avoid obstructing traffic.
  3. Turn on Hazard Lights: Activate the hazard lights to alert other drivers that your vehicle is disabled.
  4. Set Up Warning Triangles: If you have warning triangles or flares, set them up at appropriate distances behind the vehicle, typically 10 to 15 feet away. Place one triange about 100 feet behind the vehicle if on a highway.
  5. Stay Inside the Vehicle: If you’re on a busy highway and it’s not safe to exit the vehicle, stay inside with your seatbelt fastened until help arrives.
  6. Call for Help: Use your phone or a roadside assistance service to call for professional help. Provide clear details about your location and the nature of the issue.
  7. Observe and Be Aware: Keep an eye on traffic and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  8. Prepare to Evacuate: If you must exit the vehicle, do so on the side away from oncoming traffic. Be ready to move to a safe area.

For Other Drivers on the Road:

  1. Slow Down: Reduce your speed when passing a disabled vehicle to give them room and reduce the risk of accidents.
  2. Move Over: If possible, change lanes to give extra space between your vehicle and the disabled vehicle. This is often required by “Move Over” laws in many states.
  3. Stay Alert: Pay attention to the situation ahead, avoiding distractions like mobile devices.
  4. Report the Incident: If the broken-down vehicle poses a hazard, consider notifying law enforcement or highway patrol for assistance.
  5. Avoid Swerving: If you cannot change lanes, keep a steady course and maintain control of your vehicle while safely passing.

General Tips:

  • Emergency Kit: Always keep an emergency kit in your truck that includes triangles, flares, a flashlight, first aid supplies, water, and non-perishable snacks.
  • Stay Educated: Familiarize yourself with your truck’s systems to understand potential breakdown issues better.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Regular maintenance can help reduce the chances of breakdowns; check tire pressure, oil levels, and brakes periodically.

Following these tips can enhance safety for both the driver of the broken-down vehicle and other road users.

On the other side of the coin, for fellow travelers, if you see a truck and trailer parked on the highway, please remember that it is an unmovable object!  Exercise extreme caution, slow down, move over a line, and look for any objects on the road, and again, extreme caution.
